Handmade Paper from Sea to Shore

Papermaking is a craft whose ancient technique was invented almost 2,000 years ago in China 105 A.D.  The first paper mill in North America was built in 1690, a surprisingly recent technology.

While the process of mass producing paper has been refined and industrialized, making it by hand is still guided by the ancient methods: .gathering natural fibers, cooking, mashing, pressing and drying to create unique and beautiful works of art.

At the Maritime Fine Art Workshops, Linda McCausland will take you through the step by step process of making paper culminating in the creation of a very personal Island memory. Participants might walk along the shore to gather interesting natural fiber  or bring along a collection of flower petals, leaves, seaweed or ferns for inclusion in your handmade paper.
