Eel Grass Irish Moss Kelp Sea Lettuce
Stroll the beaches of Point Prim and learn to identify the seaweeds you find where the Gillis family has collected and sold Irish moss for generations. They’ve reaped the seas for years near the Island’s oldest lighthouse and now will share the experience with you. |
|
Marine botanist Dr. Irene Novaczek will join you on the beach to help you collect samples safely and explain which are edible and which have medicinal uses. Then Gilbert Gillis will show you how to rake Irish moss with equipment like that used by his father and grandfather before him and explain how this seaweed is processed to remove the carrageenan used in such things as ice cream and cosmetics. Later at the house, Goldie Gillis will help you use Irish moss to create a delicious seaweed pie to enjoy with your lunch of sea vegetable soup and dulse biscuits. You’re sure to take home wonderful memories of PEI people, as well as some Irish moss and recipes to show your friends. |
