Four mills operated here for many years and Nathaniel McLaren built this house in 1868 when the dam on this part of the Brudenell River was an important site on the main road between Montague and Cardigan. Our family, the Dewars, bought the property in 1920 and Edgar’s father James ran the saw mill until the mid 50s. The dam collapsed in the spring runoff of 1978. This is still a favorite spot for trout fishing and you may enjoy a stroll through the woods up Kelly’s Lane from the river, the route hundreds of farm wagons used on their way to and from the mills. Edgar left for university in 1958 and we visited his parents here each summer as we pursued our engineering and teaching careers in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia until we retired home in 1995. We hope you will enjoy the many treasures from our 14 years overseas. (Our sons call our home “the live-in museum”.) Restored in 1992-98, Roseneath B&B won a Heritage Award for preservation of its 1868 architecture, has been featured in many House Tours, is described in the Colour Guide to Prince Edward Island as “one of the most interesting and relaxing bits of real estate around” and was featured in Island Living magazine’s inaugural issue in 2007. Our gardens, frequently visited by garden tours, were described in the June 2003 issue of Canadian Gardening magazine and photographed by CBC TV in July 2004 as part of their series Earthly Delights.
